5 ways chess builds confidence in children

By FM Malaku Lorne 1 min read

Chess is a game, but the habits it builds follow children into the classroom and beyond.

Building confidence, concentration and strategic thinking is what the Saturday Programme is all about. Here is how the game does it.

1. Concentration

A game of chess asks for calm, steady attention. Children learn to sit with one problem until they find an answer.

2. Thinking ahead

"If I move here, what will my opponent do?" Picturing the next move is planning, and planning is a skill every subject needs.

3. Bouncing back

Every game ends with a handshake. A loss becomes a lesson to study, not a reason to quit.

4. Owning decisions

Nobody can make a move for you. Children learn to choose, commit and live with the result.

5. Friendship

Chess players make friends across ages and schools. The board is a place where a 7-year-old and a 15-year-old meet as equals.

Strategy, friendship, confidence: for a brighter tomorrow.
